Introduction

This readme contains important information about Service Pack 1 including installation, post-installation setup and issues resolved in Service Pack 1.
Service Pack 1 installs are available for the following:

ArcSDE 8.1 for IBM DB2

ArcSDE 8.1 for Informix

ArcSDE 8.1 for Microsoft SQL Server

ArcSDE 8.1 for Oracle 806

ArcSDE 8.1 for Oracle 8i

ArcSDE 8.1 Client SDK for the C and Java API

Downloads are grouped by database (or client)/platform combinations. For example, a file called oracle8i_solaris2_sp1.tar is a tar file for updating ArcSDE 8.1 for Oracle 8i on the Sun Solaris platform. The client SDK files are similarly named with the word "client" in place of the RDBMS. For example, client_hpux_sp1.tar is the updated SDK for the HP platform.Windows files have the form ArcSDE_<dbms>_sp1.exe and are setup executables. If you have installed ArcGIS Desktop 8.1 Service Pack 1, you do not need to download the Client SDK file. The ArcGIS Desktop 8.1 service pack contains the necessary ArcSDE files for ArcGIS Desktop.

Updated versions of the ArcSDE Configuration and Tuning Guide for Oracle (config_tuning_guide_oracle.pdf), SQL Server (config_tuning_guide_sqlserver.pdf) and the ArcSDE Developer Help are also available for download.

Installing Service Pack 1

Installation Notes

sdemon -o info -I config

Regardless of the database you're using, you should see the term "Service Pack 1" as part of the output.

Installing from the Web download

There are a number of downloadable files to choose from.Select the file or files you need for your system.

Windows server installs

During the service pack download, the compressed service pack executable file is saved on your hard disk. Double-click on this downloaded file to start the Service Pack 1 installation. Follow the instructions that appear.

After the installation is complete, be sure to:

a. Stop the service with the Services Manager

b. FOR INFORMIX USERS ONLY.Non- Informix users please skip to step "c".

If you did not install the "performance patch" that was made available in May (build 564) and you are upgrading to Service Pack 1 directly from ArcSDE 8.1 for Informix (build 562), then you must perform the following steps before proceeding to step "c", below :

1) As the Informix user, grant DBA permissions to the sde user for the ArcSDE database(s).

2) If the sde user cannot be granted DBA permissions for the ArcSDE database, the sde user will need to run the following command for all ArcSDE users of the ArcSDE database:

% %SDEHOME%\tools\informix\drop_std_view <ArcGIS_database> <user> <passwd>

Be sure this step is completed successfully for all users of spatial data (layers) in each ArcSDE database. The views being dropped with this tool were created while using versioned data. Some users may not have these views, but to be safe, run the drop_std_view tool. Failure to run this tool will result in serious performance issues with versioned data.

c. Run the new sdesetup<dbms> command from the DOS prompt. For example, if you are updating your Oracle 8i database for Service Pack 1:

C:\> sdesetupora8i -o upgrade

Failure to run sdesetup<dbms> to upgrade your database, will cause problems starting the service or with connecting to the service.

d. Restart your service with the Services Manager

UNIX server installs

Download the appropriate tar file to a location other than $SDEHOME.Once the file is on your system:

a. Stop your service.

sdemon -o shutdown

b.Extract the specified tar file by typing: (using Oracle 8i for Solaris as an example)

tar -xvf oracle8i_solaris2_sp1.tar

c. Start the installation by typing:

./apply_sp

This will start the dialog for the menu-driven installation procedure. Default selections are noted in parentheses    ( ). To quit the installation procedure, type 'q' at any time.

Important:You must read the license agreement addendum available on the download page or the ArcSDE 8.1 Service Pack 1 CD (sp1_license_addendum.txt) before installing this service pack.

d. FOR INFORMIX USERS ONLY.Non-Informix users please skip to step "e".

If you did not install the "performance patch" that was made available via web downloads in May (build 564) and you are upgrading to service pack 1 directly from ArcSDE 8.1 for Informix (build 562), then you must perform the following steps before proceeding to step "f":

1) As the Informix user, grant DBA permissions to the sde user for the ArcSDE database(s).

2) If the sde user cannot be granted DBA permissions for the ArcSDE database, the sde user will need to run the following command for all ArcSDE users of the ArcSDE database:

% $SDEHOME/tools/informix/drop_std_view <ArcGIS_database> <user> <passwd>

Be sure this step is completed successfully for all users of spatial data (layers) in each ArcSDE database. The views being dropped with this tool were created while using versioned data. Some users may not have these views, but to be safe, run the drop_std_view tool. Failure to run this tool will result in serious performance issues with versioned data.

e. Run the updated version of sdesetup<dbms>. Failure to do so will cause problems in starting the service or with connecting to the service.Using Oracle 8i as an example:

sdesetupora8i -o upgrade

f. Start your service again.

sdemon -o start

UNIX installs for the Client SDK only

Install this update if you are using custom (non-ESRI) C or Java applications.

a. Download the file to your system (but not to your $SDEHOME location).

b. Extract the contents of the tar file (using Solaris as an example)

tar -xvf client_solaris2_sp1.tar

c. Start the installation by typing:

./apply_sp

This will start the dialog for the menu-driven installation procedure. Default selections are noted in parentheses    ( ). To quit the installation procedure type 'q' at any time.

Important:You must read the license agreement addendum available on the download page or the ArcSDE 8.1 Service Pack CD (sp1_license_addendum.txt) before installing this service pack.

d. If using direct connect exclusively (eg: you are not using an ArcSDE service at all), you'll need to run sdesetup<dbms> to update your database.See instructions for the server install and post installation setup in the Unix server installs section above.

Installing from the ArcSDE 8.1 Service Pack 1 CD

Follow the CD mounting instructions found in your ArcSDE 8.1 Install Guide.

On the ArcSDE 8.1 Service Pack 1 CD, you will find the file you are reading now (called ArcSDE_sp1_readme.htm) and the license addendum (called sp1_license_addendum.txt) that you should read before installing this service pack. The other files on the CD are folders containing the updated files for Service Pack 1. You should see the following directories at the CD root level:

client
db2
informix
sqlserver
oracle806
oracle8i
documentation

The client and database directories contain the files for each supported platform for that database/client and the script that installs the files. The documentation folder has no script.Just copy the files you need from that folder into your SDEHOME/documentation location.

For Unix systems, change directories into the appropriate folder and run the apply_sp script. It is very important to review additional instructions in the Unix server installs or the Unix Client SDK installs sections above.

For Windows systems, change directories into the appropriate folder and run the setup executable. The setup executable name will have the form ArcSDE_<database or client>_sp1.exe. It is very important to review additional instructions in the Windows server installs or the Windows Client SDK installs sections above..

Uninstalling Service Pack 1

The service pack cannot be uninstalled without uninstalling all of ArcSDE.Once you have run the sdesetup<dbms> command to update your database for Service Pack 1, there is no command to roll back that change.Be sure you want to upgrade to Service Pack 1 before you upgrade your database.

Compatibility with ArcSDE 8.1 clients

You can use ArcSDE 8.1 clients (e.g., ArcGIS 8.1 desktop, build 642 and 649) with ArcSDE 8.1 Service Pack 1 servers as well as with ArcSDE 8.1 servers.

In this regard, there is full front-to-back compatibility with ArcSDE 8.1 clients. However, there is an issue if you are using a mix of direct connect driver files and the application server.Once the database has been upgraded to Service Pack 1 with the sdesetup<dbms> command, both the direct connect driver files and the application server must be Service Pack 1 files. You cannot use a mixture of ArcSDE 8.1 direct connect driver files and ArcSDE 8.1 Service Pack 1 application servers or vice versa on the same database.
